The Garden
The Community Vegetable Garden will provide the center with fresh produce. Most importantly, the garden project falls in line with JSLC’s ultimate goal of educating and bringing the community together, both youth and seniors. A valuable lesson to all who particpate is the importance of nurturing the environment and giving back to the community.
The garden will be used to help the children learn:
- The science behind gardening
- Healthier eating choices
- Good environmental habits, task responsibility, food supply sustainability
The garden project was brought to the center by UTD student, Tamara Robertson.
Tamara is currently working on her MBA with a concentration in Finance at the University of Texas at Dallas and will be graduating in May 2012. She attended undergraduate school at the Univeristy of Texas Arlington with a Bachelors in Business Administration and concentration in International Business. Currently, she works in the commercial real estate/investment industry and attends classes at night.
Why a Vegetable Garden at Jeffries Street, Tamara?
The vegetable garden project is important because it is about community; taking care of and nurturing it. It will provide the children and adults a chance to work together to improve and learn about their community and the environment. The garden also promotes sustainability and is a hands on learning experience; maybe some of the families will even start gardens of their own.
I have always been involved with the community and have a special interest in programs that promote education, like Jeffries Street. There could never be too many organizations like theirs. Our UTD SIFE team's initiative is to make sure Jeffries Street can continue to help and serve the community and its children by improving their marketing, pr and operational functions so they can continue to attract the funds that are necessary for the center to operate.
